Transferring her membership allowed an immediate network of like-minded women and an opportunity to learn and serve her new community. It was an integral part of a successful transition from the Midwest to the West! While at the Junior League of Olympia, Flavia has served on the Gala Committee, as chair of Community Summit and as chair of Northwest Exchange. Shawna joined the Junior League of Olympia in the Spring of 2014. Initially, she joined the League to have a closer connection to women who wanted to give back to their community and were engaged in active volunteerism. After being in the league for the last 4 years, she would tell you that the friendships she has made and the #babieswhobrunch tribe (a group of incredible women and adorable kiddos) have been the highlight of her League career.

Shawna had served on numerous placements since joining the League, such as Gala, Community Summit, Northwest Exchange, 25th Anniversary and Learning and Development. She is currently serving as the Funding Vice President and is excited to share her knowledge of nonprofit fundraising with the League.

NORMA CORTEZ MORENO
Immediate past-president

Originally from Yakima, Washington, Norma transferred from the Junior League of Yakima (JLY), to the Junior League of Olympia in 2013.  She is a past president of the JLY and has been an active member of the Junior League for 18 years.

Norma is a Confidential Secretary for the Investigative Services Bureau, with the Washington State Patrol (WSP). She has also been with the WSP for 18 years, and comes from a long line of family members who have shared in their passion to work in the law enforcement community for an agency that has pride in “service with humility."

Being involved in her community has always been important to her; the same held true when moving to Olympia four years ago. Instead of sustaining her league membership with Yakima she chose to take an active membership with Olympia to better get to know the area, the needs of our community, and the women that make it a better place. She most enjoys mentoring and encouraging other women, to find their voice, their strength, and their skills to help live their best life. The Junior League has been an incredibly positive and meaningful part of her life, as she’s seen firsthand what king of growth can come from it.  She is also a long time member of the Washington State Patrol Memorial Foundation.

She enjoys reading, wine tasting, and golfing, and is the proud mother of her 22-year old son, Cody.

Community Advisors

The Junior League of Olympia is fortunate to have a council of Community Advisors. This group is made up of individuals who represent different segments of our community. Their knowledge and expertise provide JLO with guidance in areas such as advocacy, community programs, public relations, communication, membership, fund-raising and administrative management.

Our community advisors serve on a staggered term basis and are appointed to serve for one or two year terms. The council provides JLO a vehicle to receive feedback and assistance, as well as communicate the League's purpose and programs to various sectors of the community.
