What's New
This just in! Dates for the Capitol Days 2008 are set!

Sunday, Feb. 10 (mid-afternoon and dinner)

Monday, Feb. 11 (morning to mid-afternoon)

This is the premier advocacy event for Junior League of Olympia. Spend one or both.

At the Sept. 2007 general membership meeting, Junior League actives and sustainers took a strong stand in favor of the proposed Proposition 1, which is on the Nov. 6, 2007 ballot. The proposition would increase the local sales tax by 3/10 of one percent and generate an additional $10 million dollars to help at-risk children, their families and make effective improvements in the criminal justice system. Proposition 1 fits well with JLO' s focus area of preventing child abuse and neglect in our community.

The statement of support adopted reads:

"The Junior League of Olympia is committed to developing healthy families through education, collaboration, and direct service. Our focus area is the prevention of child abuse and neglect. We support Proposition 1, the Family Investment Initiative that will be placed on the ballot for Thurston County voters on November 6th . This initiative will provide substantial funding for criminal deterrence and early prevention and intervention programs in our county. Two thirds of the funding, about $6 million, will provide support for proven, research-based prevention and early intervention programs to improve school readiness, strengthen families to p revent child abuse and neglect and prevent juvenile delinquency and youth recidivism.

Funding raised through this initiative will help prevent child abuse and neglect by providing res earch based services such as: parent and family education classes, home visitation services, help with child care for low income families, mental health services and substance abus e treatment. The funding will increase and improve a variety of services already provided in this county, reaching many additional children and families.

This is a tremendous opportunity for Thurston County to invest in our families and our children. Research has shown that money invested in prevention programs provides a positive return on investment, reducing the amount of money spent on criminal justice and increasing family earnings. This investment will improve our community and the quality of life for all of our residents. We hope that the community joins us in support of this initiative by voting yes on November 6."

JLWS's Vision JLWS Leadership 2007-2008
"The Junior Leagues of Washington State (JLWS) advocates for the well-being and needs of children while in the care of others."

JLWS is the public affairs committee through which the Junior League communicates with policy makers regarding issues of concern in the community and state. It is comprised of a senior and junior delegate, with the president and president-elect as advisors, from each of the four state Leagues in Olympia, Seattle, Spokane and Yakima.

The purpose of JLWS is to advocate in a united voice on issues important to all the state leagues and to educate, coordinate public affairs and legislative action on a statewide level, and address issues of concern to the four member leagues.

Currently JLWS is advocating for child care issues, focusing on children while in the care of others.
